The West Bathhouse at Jones Beach State Park is one of the most beloved architectural icons of coastal Long Island. RHI worked with the NY State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation to rehabilitate the historic Beaux Arts landscape that surrounded the building. The original planting—tightly clipped shrub parterres which framed resource intensive lawns or beds of rotating annuals—had eroded over the years due to a lack of resources and storms like Hurricane Sandy. Our design preserved the framework of the planting, but replaced the interiors with a dynamic composition of resilient grasses and perennials native to the harsh coastal conditions. The planting uses principles of ecological horticulture—balancing a biodiverse palette of plants with a bold pattern-making of dominant species in the upper layers.
