RHI prepared a site selection study and designed the memorial within Area One of the National Capital Mall in Washington, D.C. to memorialize George Mason. The memorial site provided the opportunity to renovate one of Washington’s historic designed landscapes, the Pansy Garden, near the Jefferson Memorial. The restored garden features plantings reflective of the site’s previous designs which date to the late 19th century, a renovated pond, new paving as well as a curved arbor framing a 12-foot long marble wall with hand-carved quotes from Mason and a bronze sculpture of Mason himself.
